The Oxford University Alumni or the "Alumni Oxonienses": The Members of the University of Oxford 1500 - 1886 (8 Volumes - complete collection) Their parentage, Birthplace and year of Birth with a record of their degrees. Being the Matriculation Register of the University, alphabetically arranged, revised and annotated, by Joseph Foster.

The Members of the University of Oxford 1500 - 1886 is the most recent addition to our ever expanding School and Alumni registers collection to over 140,000 pupils, alumni and masters dating back to 1500.

The "Alumni Oxonienses" containing the Matriculation Register from 1500 to 1886 alphabetically arranged as a distinct division, to which has been added where practicable birthdays, schools, honours, and degrees. It also includes cross-references to all the biographical notices under the respective colleges or elsewhere in the other portion of the work, Addenda and Corrections included.

The registers are exceptionally well detailed and usually give the surname, College, father's name, social status, occupation or profession and residence (town/county). The date of admission "matric" and age at admission, status and duration at the College, school, honours, and degrees are listed. Instances of a member following his brother or father in the College may also include date of death. Includes cross-references to biographical notices.

A typical biography reads as follows;

Derham, William, s. Thomas, of Paxford, co. Worcester, p.p.  TRINITY COLL., matric. 14 May, 1675, aged 17 ; B.A. 28 Jan., 1678-9, M.A. 4 July 1683, D.D. (Doctor of Divinity - by diploma) 26 June, 1730, born at Stourton, co. Worcester, 26 Nov., 1657, vicar of Wargrave, Berks, 1682-9, rector of Upminster, Essex, 1689, F.R.S. 1703, canon of Windsor 1716, until his death at Upminster 5 April, 1735. See Foster's Index Ecclesiasticus & Rawlinson, iv. 72, xvii .25

Interestingly William Derham as well as being an English clergyman and natural philosopher he was the first man known to measure the speed of sound, read his Biography in the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography.

The entries for "England's greatest warrior" Arthur Wellesley the Duke of Wellington and Oliver Cromwell are listed in the Oxford University Alumni.

The Oxford Men and Their Colleges 1880-1892 should also be consulted as it continues and completes the "Alumni Oxonienses" collection.
