The Royal Navy Records are fully searchable and cover all those who died on service in the Royal Navy as well as soldiers who or who were onboard a Royal Naval ship at the time they died. There are over 8,000 different ships listed in the information and over 2,000 different ranks. Royal Marines of all ranks are included in this section. The lists reflect the loss of many famous ships such as the Royal Oak, Hood, Ark Royal, Prince of Wales, Repulse and the Barham.

GRO Naval Ratings Indexes 1939-1948

Separate indexes of armed forces deaths have been kept since 1761. Following the War Office and Admiralty procedures for reporting, verifying and notifying next of kin of a death or presumed death, these events were recorded in consolidated registers by the General Register Office for England and Wales, but covering the whole of the UK for the period 1935 to 1950.
